Inner CityOperation InnerCity Up&Out. Go To College Free! is about to announce a formalized 3-Year education project: “Operation InnerCity Up&Out.” This pilot project will be designed as an experimental education program for Seattle’s inner city junior high and high school youth from single parent families.

Students In Single Parent Families. Up&Out will explore the formalized application of well-known learning research among inner city youth. The project will center on providing GoToCollegeFree! formal training in character, motivation, and learning skills to underprivileged and troubled youth. In its pilot 2013-2014 phase, GoToCollegeFree! will focus on only ten students in ten  single-parent families. In the pilot program, each student and parent will be selected based on ‘college dreams’ and existence of basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills at the junior high school level or higher. Only parents and students who “truly wish they could go to college” will be involved in the pilot study.

Both parent and student will attend formal character/motivation training sessions and learning skill training sessions that are sponsored and provided by GoToCollegeFree and its volunteers. This will include an annual GoToCollegeFree Basic Training Program, a one hour live Monthly Coaching Session with all ten families via Skype, and full progress monitoring of documented master plans, grades, volunteer activities, essay writing, letters of recommendation, student personal goals, and student discipline in executing their plans. Grades improvement will be documented and results tabulated. Students will be tutored twice weekly, coached and monitored monthly in building their “modifiable” College Master Plan Notebook.

Going To College Free Is The Goal. The pilot program will be conducted over a three (3) year period and will focus specifically on qualifying each student for scholarships and grants to attend college free or with substantial discounts. These discounts would be based on their performance in high school grades, SAT/ACT scores, volunteer plan execution, essays, letters of recommendations and personal inner motivation. The pilot project will be funded by a mix of GoToCollegeFree alumni donations, volunteer trainers, volunteer citizens, government grants, local businesses, GoToCollegFree and the students themselves. Voluntary participation and assistance by students and/faculty from local universities is anticipated.

Why Not Seattle First and Why Not Grassroots? Our nation’s high schools are in trouble. High school drop out rates hover around 15 to 20 percent . Single moms are often stuck in poverty and have a very difficult time with their children and helping them with their education–which is THE critical door to move up into the middle and upper classes. GoToCollegeFree wants to help and so do many of our alumni, sponsors and neighboring local businesses. What if we can prove that we can leverage and transfer our Learning Knowledge to the underprivileged in our inner cities? After we prove it works in Seattle, where might we go next? This is an exciting project that’s worth getting behind.
